first day thrills as The museum school opens!

When the idea surfaced two years ago, it seemed a near-impossible dream: A public charter school delivering a superior education to local children by 2010. Proving nothing is impossible when a community works together toward a common goal, The Museum School of Avondale Estates opened on Monday, Aug. 9 to nearly 140 students.

Already, students are experiencing what it means to attend a museum school, where hands-on learning is the first order of every day. Within the first two weeks:

  • Kindergartners got to explain their new school to befuddled classroom visitor Wacky Wilford.
  • First graders watched as a scientist visting their classroom made ice cream using liquid nitrogen.
  • Second graders journeyed out on their first learning expedition to the state capitol.
  • Third graders wrote and shared their autobiographies and got a visit from a staff member at the Atlanta History Center, who spoke about the historical figures the class is studying.
  • Avondale Estates Mayor Ed Rieker visited the school to speak to students studying the concept of government.

For parents and many people in the community, the school's opening is the fulfillment of a dream they never stopped believing in. For students, it is the beginning of a world of adventure and discovery.
