The Museum School of Avondale Estates, a free, innovative K-8 public charter school serving DeKalb County, is hosting three public open houses for prospective parents to learn about the school’s unique educational model and the requirements needed for applying to the school for the 2017-2018 academic year.
Each open house will be held in the school’s cafeteria. The school is located at 923 Forrest Blvd., Decatur, Ga., 30030. The dates and start times for each open house are:
Wed., Jan. 11 at 6:00 p.m.
Sat., Jan. 21 at 10 a.m.
Tues., Jan. 24 at 9 a.m.
Open House attendees will hear from Principal Katherine Kelbaugh about the school’s successful museum school model, which is student-centered, project-based and interdisciplinary. Each event will also include a public question-and-answer session and volunteers will be available to help answer questions about the application and required forms. Parent-guided tours of the school are available following each open house. Child care services will also be available.
The school’s enrollment period for the 2017-18 academic year is Jan. 30 through Feb. 10, 2017. The Museum School is a charter school and part of the DeKalb County School District but uses a lottery-based enrollment process separate from the county’s School Choice program.
The school’s lottery is based on a two-tiered attendance zone. Students who live in the DeKalb County School District are eligible to apply. Priority is given to children of families living in Focus Area 1, which follows the attendance lines established by DeKalb County Schools for Avondale Elementary School and Peachcrest Elementary School. If any grade level does not receive enough applications from Focus Area 1 to fill available spots, that grade’s lottery will be opened to children of families living in Focus Area 2 (the remainder of the DeKalb County School District) who apply by the deadline.
Prospective parents seeking inclusion in the lottery must have a fully completed
application, along with supporting required documents, submitted to the school during
the enrollment period, with a final deadline date of Feb. 10. The lottery will be held in the school’s cafeteria on Feb. 15 and is open to the public.
