America and the Modern World

Fifth Grade Unit 4 Exhibit Night 2024

Thursday, May 16th | 5:15-6:00

During our residency with the Alliance Theater, each homeroom created their own original theater piece based on William Shakespeare’s Seven Ages of Man speech. Students will take you through their version of each of Shakespeare’s stages, using performing techniques like tableaux and dance. Don’t miss our Me-Made Magazines, featuring topics we were passionate about this year. Finally, meet some 5th grade poets, who will share their original work in Poets’ Corner.

Ask an Explorer:

  • What is an example of figurative language in poetry?
  • Think about one of the poems you wrote in ELA. How did you decide what to write about?
  • Do you think you’ve changed since the beginning of 5th grade? Why or why not?

Travel Journals + Expeditions

Students worked hard on their travel journals this quarter! Take a look at all they learned.

Student Expeditions:

  • Atlanta History Center “Fight for Your Right”
  • Camp Fortson

Merely Players

During our residency with the Alliance Theater, each homeroom created their own original theater piece based on William Shakespeare’s Seven Ages of Man speech. Students will take you through their version of each of Shakespeare’s stages, using performing techniques like tableaux and dance. Classes also responded to some stages with their own original poetry and writing, and they’ve even added some new stages they think Shakespeare missed. All the world’s a stage, and our fifth graders are far more than merely players!

I do not think my life is like a play or a performance. A play or performance is usually thought out. My life is more like a roller coaster because my life goes up and down, and up and down.
– Abigail Thornton

Poetry Cafe

Stop by the 5th grade’s interactive poetry café, where you can listen to 5th grade poets who step up to share original poetry. You can even try it yourself, reading aloud some of the poetry we’ve read in the 5h grade.

Free verse speaks to me the most because you can write about anything and make more of a story then anything of any other types of poetry.
– Christine Ivy

Geometric Art

Students created a variety of projects, using different geometric ideas. In art, students created one point perspective drawings. Students drafted the drawings and then used mixed media to create paintings or 3-D posters. A small group of students collaborated with 8th grade students to begin learning how to use Desmos to plot negative and positive sloped lines to create an image. Use the geoboards and rubber bands to create your own shape!

Me-Made Magazines

Students picked a topic they were passionate about this year and created a magazine about it! Learn about how to survive 5th grade, the battles of World War II, or how electromagnets work!

The most important thing I’ve learned is how to identify plants so I can eat wild plants in the future.
– Victoria Jimenez

Innovative Energy

5th grade Explorers Squared began our unit studying potential and kinetic energy by building roller coasters. Explorers took their roller coaster excitement into student-choice Book Clubs and created a Literary Theme Park to showcase the plot, themes, and important details of their club novels.

I understood potential and kinetic energy while making a roller coaster by trying and determining the height and speed the marble needed to pass the loop.
