Seventh Grade

Unit 4 Exhibit Night 2024

Thursday, May 16th | 6:15-7:00

7th grade students have used their knowledge of World Studies, ELA, Science, and Math content in order to create exciting, family-friendly games to play for this Exhibit Night! In World Studies, students have learned about the geography of Africa, learned about ethnic groups in Kenya, European colonization of Africa and the lasting impact of exploitation of the land and people of Africa. We have explored the system of apartheid in South Africa and learned about the Pan-African movement, the Mau Mau rebellion, and Nelson Mandela. In Mathematics, students are putting together all of their knowledge about 7th grade math standards to write word problems using math concepts from topics of number systems, proportionality, geometry, statistics, and equations.

Student Expeditions:

  • Atlanta Botanical Gardens “Plants Around the World”

World Studies: Scramble for Africa

In World Studies, students have learned about the geography of Africa, learned about ethnic groups in Kenya, European colonization of Africa and the lasting impact of exploitation of the land and people of Africa. We have explored the system of apartheid in South Africa and learned about the Pan-African movement, the Mau Mau rebellion, and Nelson Mandela.

Ask an Explorer:

  • Why did European countries colonize Africa?
  • What are some of the lasting effects from colonization?

Pan-Africanism was a long-lasting movement for the entirety of Africa to be independent. The movement was started in the early 20th century after Europe had nearly all of Africa under their control.

Walk for Water

Students will participate in walking a distance of 5 kilometers to gain an understanding and develop empathy for women and children in Sub-Saharan Africa who walk to a water source several times a day just for survival. Students will carry 1 gallon of water (approx. 8lbs) on the walk. Students will receive sponsorships for completing the 5k walk and all proceeds will be donated to the Water for South Sudan project.

Family Game Night

Students have synthesized original games to demonstrate a year’s worth of learning with creativity and content knowledge. Each game is an original concept that involves review questions for all academic subjects; ELA, Math, Science, & World Studies. Their goal is to teach and engage family members, peers, and our community in their learning this year.

ELA Multi-Genre Projects

The Multi-Genre Project is a meaningful culminating activity that allows students to demonstrate their understanding of the multiple genres learned in ELA this year. This alternative final exam begins with analyzing the Amanda Gorman poem, “The Hill We Climb”. Students choose a theme from the poem to work as a common thread among genres in the 3-5 writing pieces. Students then design a creative display that showcases their understanding while allowing the freedom to highlight their interests and connections.
