The Museum in a Box program brings lessons to life by placing hands-on teaching tools directly in the classroom. Interactive learning trunks include hundreds of museum-quality artifacts, maps, costumes, books, scientific tools and historical documents that make classroom lessons tangible and boost comprehension and vocabulary with real-world materials.

In 2012, The Museum School of Avondale Estates was awarded a Race-to-the-Top grant to share our museum education model with elementary schools across Georgia. Museum School teachers, alongside curricular partners:

  • Atlanta History Center
  • Zoo Atlanta
  • Fernbank Museum of Natural History
  • Georgia Aquarium
  • Georgia Tech’s CEISMC

Together, we have built 25 interdisciplinary learning trunks, complete with lesson plans that reflect Common Core Georgia Performance Standards.

Museum boxes are available now to public schools throughout Georgia
Work with first graders to explore life as a meteorologist and read biographies of Lewis, Clark and Sacajawea; help fourth graders follow Native American peoples across time; or show kindergartners how to discover animal families. Teachers can present a panorama of Freedom Fighters to third graders, show second graders how to build simple machines and examine Civil War artifacts with fifth graders.
