This year, students learned about the unequal distribution of water in Africa, and the impact it has on health, education, poverty, and hunger. To raise awareness and money to benefit LifeStraw, students will complete a 6K walk carrying 1 gallon of water (weighs roughly 8.34 pounds).
LifeStraw has been providing access to safe water to schools in western Kenya since 2014. They accomplish this through the distribution of high-volume LifeStraw Community water purifiers. Each purifier serves 75-100 school children and lasts 3-5 years as it filters approximately 100,000 liters of water. But they’re beginning to reach the massive number of schools and school children without access to safe water in Kenya. It is one of the largest climate and safe water projects globally. Some 877,505 families use LifeStraw Family water filters to purify water in their home, rather than boiling water for drinking over open fires. LifeStraw was one of nine ‘lighthouse’ projects selected by the United Nations in 2012 as best practice examples of climate action.
