The Museum School of Avondale Estates opened its state-of-the-art media center last week with a ribbon cutting ceremony and tour of the new facility. More than 150 parents, community members and school supporters attended the ceremony.
The Dr. Alexandra and Dr. Anthony Webb Media and Learning Center features technology pods, a maker space, outdoor classroom and rain garden and traditional library resources. The center includes dedicated spaces for new readers and for young adolescents. The center features self-checkout kiosks so students can check out their own books. The inviting space was designed by LAS Architecture and Headley Construction served as the contractor.
Clay Jones, chair of The Museum School’s governing board, told the crowd he was especially proud the project came in on time and on budget. Jones recognized the work of the school’s governing board, specifically the facilities and finance committee, the school’s advisory council, the foundation board, LAS Architects, Headley Construction, school staff, parents and the community and students.
“It took our entire community to make this happen,” he said.
Executive Director Katherine Kelbaugh said while other media centers are inviting, “this media center is magnetic.”
“This media center is so much more than a media center,” Kelbaugh said. “I’m so honored, along with our board and staff, to offer students a place where they can discover themselves and begin to quench their thirst for knowledge.”
Kelbaugh thanked the Webb family for their generous contribution. “The impact of the Webb family on this school and this community is immeasurable.”
Sasha Webb, a founding board member of The Museum School, recalled hours spent in the library, sorting books and working with staff.
“We feel a special connection to this media center,” Webb told the crowd. “And we hope that it inspires a love of reading and learning in a new generation of explorers.”
Principal Mike Stewart, who returned to The Museum School this fall, said he was excited about the new school year and the impact of the center.
“It is a privilege and an honor to be back at the school and to take on the role of principal,” Stewart said. “I am so thankful to be here with all of you.”
